Frequently Asked Questions About Terminal Solutions

Terminal automation helps reduce losses through precise measurement and continuous monitoring that can catch discrepancies early. Automated calculations per API and ASTM standards help minimize manual errors. Key capabilities include:

Continuous monitoring helps detect leaks and unauthorized transfers.
Automated overfill protection helps prevents spills.
SIL-certified outputs can connect to safety systems.
Alarm escalation can provide early warning.

Custody transfer certifications (OIML R85, API 3.1B) support compliance. Accurate measurement also helps reduces disputes, while documented calculations support audits.

Technology selection depends on both tank characteristics and operational requirements. Servo gauging excels in applications requiring highest accuracy (±0.5mm) for custody transfer and works with all product types including high-viscosity liquids. Radar gauging excels in harsh conditions, reduces moving parts for lower maintenance and enables wireless connectivity that can cut installation costs by 50%+.¹

Our Servo vs Radar Selection Guide can walk you through application-specific factors. Site surveys help assess configurations and recommend the optimal technology for your tanks.

Multiple communication protocols help connect terminal gauging to existing infrastructure without having to replace functional equipment. This flexibility helps protect your investment in current automation systems while enabling modern gauging capabilities. Integration capabilities include:

HART 7 for DCS and PLC integration with full device descriptors.
Modbus RTU and TCP/IP for SCADA connectivity.
TRL2 protocol helps migrate from legacy systems.
OPC and ODBC support for enterprise applications.

The CIU 888 gateway offers redundant Ethernet ports and can concentrate data from multiple tanks into a single data stream. Wireless options help reduce cabling costs while maintaining secure communication. This open architecture approach means facilities can add new gauging technology incrementally, modernizing terminals at their own pace without wholesale system replacement.
