Ready for Takeoff: Futureshapers from Around the World Gather for Annual Leadership Challenge Academy

Nearly 250 students from 38 countries came together for the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy – a week-long immersive experience designed to build the next generation of STEM leaders.

Hosted at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, the annual academy brings together students aged 16-18 for hands-on STEM learning and leadership development. From rocket design and coding to mission-based teamwork, participants experience what it takes to solve complex challenges – together.  

“We hope we can grow individuals who are going to want to help us further space exploration and be the next generation of explorers,” said Pat Ammons, Senior Director of Communications at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Beyond technical skills, the academy places strong emphasis on leadership, communication, and collaboration – capabilities that matter across industries. Students work in diverse teams, learning how to read, listen and solve problems alongside peers from different cultures and backgrounds.

This year’s cohort represented countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, Taiwan, Spain, and Brazil. For many students, it was their first opportunity to engage directly with scientists, engineers, and former NASA astronauts – offering a tangible look at real-world STEM careers and role models.

In recent years, Honeywell expanded the program beyond employees and their families, partnering with non-profit organizations to sponsor students from communities around the world. These partnerships cover the full cost of participation, helping remove barriers to access.

“This is a life-changing experience for them. This is an opportunity for us to create an impact in the community and look for students who might not otherwise be able to attend,” said Sanjay Srinivasan, Sr. Corporate Responsibility Specialist at Honeywell. “It offers us an opportunity to change their lives for good and build our future Futureshapers,” he added.

As technology and science continue to evolve, Honeywell is helping advance the academy’s curriculum to reflect the skills students will need next. Future sessions are expected to incorporate learning around artificial intelligence and emerging technologies – ensuring participants are prepared for what comes next.
