Honeywell’s Industrial Automation and Building Automation businesses have received four Red Dot awards and three iF Design awards in this year’s international design competitions. Products selected to win Red Dot Product Design Awards are judged for their innovation, functionality and longevity by a jury of experts. The iF Design Awards honor achievements across disciplines including product design, packaging design, interior architecture, professional concept and user experience.

Honeywell Industrial Automation and Honeywell Building Automation have received a combined 108 international design awards over the last decade, thanks to the dedicated Honeywell User Experience Design (HUE) team made up designers around the world. The team uses customer insights, deep domain knowledge and a co-design approach with users to design high-performing and ergonomic new products. From initial sketches to 3D printed models that are tested by potential end users to the finished products, HUE keeps user-friendly design at the center of the process. All in all, product design at Honeywell is not just for looks, but to build technologies with a purpose: to make the user more productive and safer in their daily work environment.

Designing for Smooth Workflows: The Honeywell Granit Ultra Scanner

One of the 2025 Red Dot winners is the Granit Ultra Rugged Scanner, a unique product incorporating AI algorithms to increase scanning speed. Another critical design element of the device is the docking experience, when a warehouse worker puts the device in the dock to charge. “It’s important for the worker to be able to easily, quickly and securely dock their device, even if it’s mounted vertically on a forklift where it will be exposed to bumps and possible impacts,” said Jose Sanchez de la Rosa, Senior User Experience Designer. “If the device comes loose from the dock or doesn’t insert properly, it requires extra steps for the worker and takes up valuable time in their daily workflow.”

The Granit Ultra incorporates a retractable top latch to hold the scanner in place when it’s inserted into the dock’s head nest. The activating latches secure the device in the base with strong retention, giving it stability under shock and vibration conditions and making the docking movement easy for the end-user. “The Granit Ultra also has a wider foot area than prior scanner models, allowing it to stand up on its own,” said Sanchez de la Rosa. “This makes it versatile to use in many types of industrial settings.”

Sanchez de la Rosa added: “This solution is the result of a multidisciplinary, holistic approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data gathered from user tests. This method aligns with our business objectives while enhancing usability and the user experience.”

Designing for Tight Spaces: The Honeywell RAEGuard Energy Storage Gas Detector

Another 2025 award-winning product is the RAEGuard Energy Storage Gas Detector. This technology is used in battery energy storage systems (BESS), which contain lithium battery cells, modules and racks. BESS operations need gas detection systems to help mitigate risks associated with any harmful gas releases from the batteries. Energy storage systems also have small spaces and tight corners where gas detectors would need to fit.

“Knowing this was a customer pain point, the HUE team designed the product to be compact so it could be easily installed into a narrow space,” said Janet Jin, Honeywell User Experience Design Fellow. “In addition to its small size, the RAEGuard has an indicator light that can be seen from any angle, even at a distance, making it easy for operators to see its status in cramped BESS cabinets. In these ways, our design prioritizes both the user experience and safety in the BESS space.”

“We knew the device would need to be rugged and able to reliably detect gases in high-altitude, extreme environments with large temperature variations,” Jin further explained. As a result, the detector is designed to operate in temperatures from -30°C to 60°C (-22°F to 140°F) and at altitudes up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).

Recap of All 2025 Design Winners
Honeywell’s award-winning solutions for 2025 include:

RAEGuard Energy Storage Gas Detector (Red Dot and iF Design winner)
This gas detector for battery energy storage systems can detect extremely low concentrations of flammable gases such as hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), providing early warning in case of the battery overheating or a “thermal runaway” event. The detector features a 360-degree halo indicator light, visible from any angle, elevating safety and protection.

Granit Ultra Rugged Scanner (Red Dot winner)
This barcode scanner scans more than 40% faster than predecessor models using new AI and decoding technology. It provides visual, auditory and haptic feedback (vibrations) to users, making it suitable for a variety of workers to use. The scanner can be mounted either flat or vertically and can withstand impacts and vibrations found in challenging industrial settings.

CT37 Handheld Computer (Red Dot winner)
This lightweight mobile computer is built for use in fast-paced retail and healthcare environments. It has a consumer phone-like user experience that today’s workforce expects and incorporates the latest computing technology. The CT37 is designed to streamline tasks, such as mobile point of sale, price checks, patient identification and secure text communication, to ultimately help improve customer and patient experiences.

HF700 Series Fixed-Mount Scanner (Red Dot winner)
This fixed barcode reader is ideal for electronics, automotive, lithium-ion battery, photovoltaic (solar panel) and other industrial environments. Its compact size and user-friendly software simplifies set-up and installation. It also has a one-click self-learning function to help it adapt quickly to complex barcodes, minimizing debugging time.

CK62 Rugged Handheld Computer (iF Design winner)
This lightweight mobile computer is designed for workers in warehouses and distribution centers. It excels at reading damaged or blurred barcodes, providing reliable data access and data entry in challenging conditions, and can withstand frequent drops and tumbles.

Honeywell Galaxy MK9 Keypad (iF Design winner)
This keypad is a user interface for commercial intrusion systems. It allows for quick and secure system state transitions via Prox and keypad input. The MK9 features an OLED screen to deliver instant-on, clear feedback, and an intelligent interactive experience. Leveraging the OLED's completely dark appearance, the integrated screen and button design seamlessly blend into the environment while conserving energy. The plug-and-play terminal, improved cable channel and robust tamper protection enables efficient installation and configuration.
